Welcome
Founded in 2002, The University of Arizona Center for the Study of Syntax, housed in the department of linguistics, provides a central location for the study of theoretical syntax and related areas at the University of Arizona. The mission of the center is to foster a collaborative and interactive research environment for students and faculty pursing research into formal approaches to sentence structure.
The primary activities of the center include providing:
- opportunities for collaborative research among faculty and students.
- facilities (computers, a small library, online access etc.) for students to pursue syntactic research.
- the organization conferences; lecture series, colloquia, and informal discussions of syntactic theory.
- meetings of the
Syntax Salon
, an informal reading group, which discusses recent and seminal papers in syntactic theory. - support for grant and fellowship applications from faculty and student affiliates
- a support base for distinguished visiting scholars who work primarily in syntax.
- support and curriculum development to further the teaching of syntax at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Run the Arizona Minimalist Syntax Archives (www.minimalism.Arizona.edu) (Currently defunct -- anyone want to pick up the banner?)
The main facility of the center is the computer room/research lab on the Comm floor of the Communications Buiing (room 114D). The lab contains a small meeting space, 3 computers and a small (but growing) library. Students are encouraged to use this facility for their work in syntax.
The center has affiliated faculty with interests in formal syntax from a wide variety of departments on campus including linguistics, SLAT, psychology, English, French and Spanish and Portuguese. All students with an interest in syntax are also invited to participate.
